After months away from side projects, I jumped back in and I’m reminded why they’re absolute game-changers for professional growth.
I’ve always been a strong advocate for side projects, but taking a break made me realize just how much I was missing. The benefits go far beyond just building something cool:
- When time is limited, you learn to focus on what truly matters
- You get better at defining MVPs and shipping iteratively
- You get the freedom to explore technologies and approaches your day job doesn’t allow
- Learning skills from side projects inevitably enhance your primary work
My current project? I’m building a custom WordPress theme for my portfolio and integrating AI throughout my entire workflow. What started as a simple portfolio refresh has become a masterclass in AI-assisted design and development.
The progress has been remarkable. I’m discovering new ways to leverage AI for code generation, problem-solving, and even design decisions. Tasks that used to take hours are now completed in minutes, but more importantly, I’m learning faster than ever before.
The energy is infectious. There’s something uniquely stimulating about combining all your skills on something you’re genuinely excited to build.
Bottom line: Side projects aren’t just hobbies. They’re professional development accelerators. They keep your skills sharp, your creativity flowing, and your passion for building alive.
