Experimenting with new routines

Sometimes the most profound changes begin with the simplest discoveries.

For me, it was a YouTube video I stumbled across earlier this year. The video was of QuestLove, from The Roots, delivering a commencement speech. He shared five life-changing practices. Among his insights, the transformative power of starting each day with gratitude and affirmations stood out to me.

At the time, I was navigating a particularly challenging period in my life. QuestLove’s words resonated deeply, inspiring me to experiment with incorporating gratitude and affirmations into my existing journaling routine. I decided to dedicate a few minutes each day to writing down what I was grateful for and crafting affirmations aligned with my goals.

The impact of gratitude journaling was immediate and surprising. Within days, I noticed a shift in my mood and outlook. The practice seemed to rewire my perspective, helping me focus on what was working rather than what wasn’t. I felt happier and more positive, even during difficult moments.

The affirmations took longer to take root. Initially, the changes were subtle—barely noticeable shifts in how I carried myself and approached challenges. But over time, something deeper began to happen. My confidence started building incrementally. My behaviours began aligning with the person I was describing in my daily affirmations. Most importantly, I started genuinely believing the positive things I was telling myself.

What began as an experiment evolved into a cornerstone of my daily routine. The practice reminded me that sometimes the most accessible tools for personal growth are also the most powerful—we just need to be willing to show up consistently and trust the process.
