I’ve been experimenting with an AI first design workflow for the last few months. It’s exciting, scary, and frustrating all at the same time.
What’s clear is there isn’t one way to work with AI. Every project or need is different. Here are a few different ways I’ve used AI to design:
- Work directly in code, designing features as I go. I feel out the experience and make adjustments in real time.
- Have AI do research and highlight the top issues. Then present some options for how to address those issues.
- Design in Figma, share the designs with AI to get design feedback, and iterate.
- Review my Figma designs from an engineering perspective. I ask my engineering agent to find holes in the designs and call out edge cases that I haven’t accounted for.
- Brainstorm copy together, either from scratch or from my rough notes.
- Ask AI to review an existing product and come up with recommendations to improve it.
- Present AI with a problem, and then ask it to generate a prompt which I can plug into tools like Lovable, v0, Bolt, Claude Design, etc.
I’m curious how you’re using AI to design. What’s your setup?
