It’s been three weeks since I joined Wave. During that time, I’ve been onboarding and doing my design work in Figma. While AI is top of mind for the company, it isn’t all people are talking and thinking about. It’s been refreshing to take a break from all the hype.
I have enjoyed getting back into Figma and “doing things by hand”. It’s fun exploring different ideas, leaving, coming back, and coming up with more. Plus, it’s super easy and quick to act on feedback. I’ve been happy with the results.
For the better part of the year, I’ve been experimenting with various AI-first approaches. Either vibe-coding my way to a solution, brainstorming with AI, or generating ideas with AI.
I wouldn’t say one approach is better than the other. There’s something serendipitous about vibe-coding your way to a solution. Sometimes new ideas come as you’re exploring. Sometimes AI surprises you. My hesitation with this approach is that you might be leaving ideas off the table by jumping straight to a solution.
Maybe the answer is somewhere in the middle. A world where you explore ideas up front. Quickly and cheaply. Then you go into prototyping. That happens much quicker when you have everything all sketched out already.
It’s still too early to say but this is where I’m leaning.
